Author Musings:
I started formulating The Green Ticket while my debut novel, Destined to Fail was off with the editor. I liked the idea of having a money versus morals story, but I just kept thinking of Hugh Hefner and his young, blonde girlfriends. I really did not want to write a book along those lines, so I kept thinking. The first scene that I actually created for the book is where Alex and Lila are chatting about Alex’s job, and Lila mentions Alex getting “the green ticket” – a play on “the golden ticket” from Willy Wonka. From there, the story and characters started coming together in my head, and shortly after that I had my plot pinpointed.
It’s funny to think of where inspiration comes from for an author or how they get their ideas to make it from their head to the computer. My favorite part (said with slight sarcasm) is seeing how different the end story is even after all the plotting. Once I started getting more and more ideas after that initial thought, I had an idea to create a husband and wife team that were just bad people, greedy, selfish, etc. But as I was writing, the wife character, Dani, would just not cooperate. She was giving, unselfish, and a very loveable character that try as I might I could not turn evil. So one major rewrite was needed, but in the end, I came away with a story that I truly love. And I believe it all starts with the author. If you don’t love and believe in your work – how can others?
