Goodreads Summary:
When King Jameson declares his love for Lady Hollis Brite, Hollis is shocked—and thrilled. After all, she’s grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king’s attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. Capturing his heart is a dream come true.
But Hollis soon realizes that falling in love with a king and being crowned queen may not be the happily ever after she thought it would be. And when she meets a commoner with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she finds that the future she really wants is one that she never thought to imagine.
My Review:
So, I know The Selection series from Kiera Cass had mixed reviews but I absolutely loved it. I was really excited when I learned that she was writing another book, and this was one of my most anticipated books of the year. I was really excited to receive and ARC of it, and couldn’t wait to start reading.
This book started off very similar to the Selection. I loved this because I enjoyed the Selection, but I was also confused why she was writing something so similar. It starts off with a royal looking for a wife, and once he’s singled one out there is also a love triangle involved. There were a lot of politics involved as well. To say the rest of the book was the complete opposite of the Selection is an understatement. I don’t want to say too much more and spoil the book, but I found myself very frustrated with the rest of the book. With the love triangle I felt like Kiera Cass tried too hard to make us want Hollis to end up with a specific character. It was very insta-love and wishy-washy. I wan’t a fan of it, and then the ending completely broke my heart. I’m honestly not sure what more there is to this story to continue in a second book, and how this story can be redeemed from here.
It’s definitely not the worst book I’ve ever read, and I will probably read the second book in this series out of curiosity, but I had really high hopes for this book that were not met.
